Castle Garden Square was built in 1927 and is a partly listed building (with a section of the building having been reconstructed in 1957) and is different, in many aspects, from the typical Wilhelminian-style buildings. The building structure, the design and the layout of the floor plans show that the planners and constructors set high standards with regards to the living space for the residents. The name Castle Garden Square is a reflection of the residence’s proximity to the Charlottenburg Castle, as well as the layout of the apartments themselves: arranged in large square-shape around green and peaceful internal gardens - an oasis in the city. Castle Garden Square is quite different from most Berlin apartment buildings. Its resident-friendly design was celebrated as an innovation in 1927 and even today sets standards by way of housing construction.. The spacious and bright apartments all have a view of the leafy inner courtyard which is unusual in Berlin. Even on the side of the street, the buildings are fringed by old trees. In the part of the building reconstructed in 1957 one can recognise the architect’s continued goal to achieve a particularly high quality of living.
The apartments are generously sized (varying from 45 – 95m²), high ceilinged and airy, with wooden floors, and almost all apartments have balconies and local stairwells. Thanks to investment grants from the State of Berlin, a complete and comprehensive renovation took place between 1999 and 2000.
The external walls in the areas of the cellar and apartments are of solid construction. The cellar external brickwork is sealed with a bituminous coating and steel/stone constructions were used for the cellar ceilings with wooden beams and reinforced concrete used for the upper floor ceilings. The roof is a tiled ridged roof. During the reconstruction work in 1999/2000 extensive tiling work, as well as façade re-plastering and re-painting took place. Incidentally, the façade itself is of rough lime cement plasterwork and plaster partially covered with heavy fireproof bricks. The cellar stairs are of solid construction and the stairs in the upper floors are fitted with a wood and linoleum covering. The kitchens and bathrooms have also undergone upgrading and modernizing. Castle Garden Square is supplied with district heating and warm water via central heating.
The modernization programme already taken place and subsequent works will be carried out together with the TÜV Industrie Service GmbH – TÜV Süd (Technical Inspection Authority) and, upon completion of the restoration works, a quality certificate will be awarded.
